Central Bank Money

Central bank money is money that represents a direct liability of a central bank. It includes physical currency and certain balances held at the central bank, while the exact forms available depend on the financial system and type of participant.

Why it matters to you

The identity of the issuer matters when comparing forms of money. Central bank money, commercial bank deposits and privately issued stablecoins can all be used to transfer value, but they represent claims on different entities and therefore involve different structures and risks.
