Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC)

A Central Bank Digital Currency, usually shortened to CBDC, is a digital form of central bank money issued by a country's monetary authority. CBDCs can be designed for public use, financial institutions or particular settlement purposes depending on the system.

Why it matters to you

CBDCs are sometimes discussed alongside stablecoins and tokenized deposits, but they are structurally different. A CBDC is a liability of a central bank, while commercial bank deposits are liabilities of commercial banks and privately issued stablecoins depend on their own issuer and reserve structure.
