Put Option

A put option gives its buyer the right, but not the obligation, to sell the underlying asset at the option's strike price according to the contract's terms.

Why it matters to you

Puts are commonly used to position for falling prices or protect an existing investment against downside. Like calls, their value depends on more than whether the underlying asset moves in the expected direction.
