Exercise
Exercise is the process through which an option holder uses the contractual right provided by the option. For a call, this generally means exercising the right to buy the underlying according to the contract. For a put, it generally means exercising the right to sell.
Why it matters to you
Options are contracts containing rights, not merely instruments whose market prices move. Understanding exercise helps explain what an option ultimately represents.
