Protective Put

A protective put combines ownership of an underlying asset with a long put designed to limit downside below a specified level over the option's life.

Why it matters to you

It works conceptually like purchasing downside protection. The trader retains upside exposure to the underlying while paying premium for protection against a major decline below the put strike. Protection has a cost. Repeatedly purchasing puts can reduce returns if the protection is never needed.
