Hedge

A hedge is a position or strategy designed to reduce exposure to a particular market risk.

Why it matters to you

A trader or investor does not always need to sell an underlying asset to reduce short term directional exposure. For example, someone holding BTC spot could potentially use a BTC short derivative position to offset part of the price exposure. A hedge reduces specific risk but can introduce other costs and risks.
