Market impact is the effect an order or series of orders has on market price as it consumes available liquidity.
Why it matters to you
A large market order may not simply execute at the price visible on screen. As it consumes liquidity at one price, it may need to execute against progressively worse prices. The larger the order relative to available market depth, the greater the potential market impact.
