Futures Basis

Futures basis is the difference between the price of a futures contract and the relevant spot or underlying reference price. For dated futures, this difference can reflect factors such as time to expiry, financing conditions and market expectations.

Why it matters to you

Perpetual traders will often encounter basis when comparing spot, perpetual and dated futures markets. Understanding it helps explain why derivative prices do not always exactly match spot prices.
