Futures Contract

A futures contract is a derivative agreement linked to an underlying asset or reference price, with terms specifying how the contract is settled. Traditional futures contracts generally have specified expiration or settlement dates.

Why it matters to you

Understanding traditional futures makes the word perpetual much easier to understand. Traditional futures have defined expiries. Perpetual futures remove that fixed expiry and use mechanisms such as funding to help keep the contract aligned with the underlying market.
