Basis

Basis is the difference between the price of a derivative contract and the price of its underlying or reference market. The exact convention used to express basis can vary depending on the market and platform.

Why it matters to you

Basis shows whether a derivative is trading above or below its underlying reference. For perp traders, changes in basis can provide information about positioning, demand for leveraged exposure and the relationship between derivatives and spot markets.
