Synthetic Position

A synthetic position uses combinations of options and, in some cases, the underlying to create an economic exposure resembling another position.

Why it matters to you

Calls, puts and the underlying are mathematically related. Understanding synthetic positions helps traders see that strategies which look different can sometimes create very similar payoff profiles.
