Settlement Finality

Settlement finality is the point at which a transaction is considered complete and cannot normally be reversed through the settlement system. In blockchain based markets, technical finality depends on the design and rules of the network being used.

Why it matters to you

Investors and financial institutions need certainty about when ownership and payment have actually changed hands. Faster and clearer settlement finality can reduce uncertainty, but technical blockchain finality and legal finality are not necessarily identical.
