Reference Class

A reference class is a group of comparable historical situations used to help estimate the probability of a current event.

Why it matters to you

Choosing an appropriate comparison group can improve probability estimates. The challenge is deciding which past situations are genuinely comparable to the event being analyzed. A poor reference class can produce a misleading base rate.
