Prior Probability

Prior probability is the probability assigned to an outcome before incorporating a new piece of information or evidence.

Why it matters to you

Good forecasting usually begins with an existing probability rather than starting from zero every time new information appears. New evidence should then cause the estimate to move by an amount justified by the strength of that evidence.
