Open Interest (OI)
Open interest, usually shortened to OI, measures the amount of outstanding derivative exposure represented by contracts or positions that remain open. It changes as positions are opened and closed.
Why it matters to you
Open interest helps traders understand whether exposure in a derivatives market is expanding or contracting. Rising OI generally indicates that additional positions or exposure are entering the market. Falling OI generally indicates that positions or exposure are being closed. But OI alone does not tell you whether traders are bullish or bearish. Every derivative contract involves opposing sides.
