Long Unwinding
Long unwinding occurs when traders reduce or close existing long positions. Closing long exposure generally involves selling, which can contribute to downward price pressure.
Why it matters to you
If price falls while open interest also falls, long positions being closed may be one possible explanation. That differs from a decline accompanied by rapidly rising OI, which may indicate new derivatives exposure entering during the move.
