Early Exercise
Early exercise occurs when an option is exercised before expiration. It is possible only when the contract's exercise style and applicable rules permit it.
Why it matters to you
Owning an American style option does not mean exercising early is automatically the best choice. An option may still contain extrinsic value that could be lost through exercise. Factors such as dividends can also affect exercise incentives for certain equity options.
