Collateral Weight

A collateral weight is the proportion of an asset's value that a platform recognizes for margin purposes. Riskier or more volatile assets may receive a lower collateral weight than more stable collateral.

Why it matters to you

Two assets with the same market value may not provide the same amount of usable margin. A haircut to collateral value gives the platform additional protection against changes in the value of the asset supporting leveraged positions.
