Closing an Option

Closing an option means entering an offsetting transaction that reduces or eliminates an existing options position. For a long option: Sell to Close For a short option: Buy to Close

Why it matters to you

Closing and exercising are different. A trader who owns an option and wants to realise its market value will often sell the option rather than exercise it, particularly when the contract still contains extrinsic value.
