Time Value

Time value is a commonly used term for the portion of an option's premium associated with the possibility that its value may change before expiration. It is often used closely with the concept of extrinsic value.

Why it matters to you

More time before expiration generally gives the underlying more opportunity to move. As expiration approaches, this component of option value is affected by time decay.
