Short Volatility

Short volatility describes a position or strategy that generally benefits when volatility or realized movement is lower than the position has effectively priced or sold, depending on the structure. Short options commonly provide negative Vega exposure.

Why it matters to you

A short volatility trader is often expressing the view that the market is pricing too much uncertainty or movement. But short volatility strategies can carry substantial risk when markets move sharply.
