IV Expansion

IV expansion occurs when implied volatility rises.

Why it matters to you

Rising IV generally increases the value of options with positive Vega, all else equal. IV often expands when uncertainty increases or ahead of events expected to produce substantial price movement. This means an option can increase in value even without a large move in the underlying if implied volatility rises enough.
