Historical Volatility

Historical volatility measures how much an asset's price has varied over a historical period using past price data.

Why it matters to you

Historical volatility helps traders understand how volatile an asset has actually been. It can then be compared with the volatility implied by option prices. But historical volatility describes the past. It does not tell traders with certainty how volatile the asset will be in the future.
