Expire Out of the Money

An option expires out of the money when it has no intrinsic value according to the relevant expiration or settlement reference.

Why it matters to you

An OTM option at expiration generally has no intrinsic payoff. For a straightforward long option that expires worthless, the premium paid is lost.
