Averaging Down

Averaging down means adding to a position after its price has fallen, thereby reducing the average entry price.

Why it matters to you

A lower average entry does not automatically improve the trade. The trader is increasing exposure to a position that has already moved against them. With options, the original loss may have occurred because of: direction, time decay, falling IV, or a deteriorating thesis. A cheaper option is not automatically a better option.
