Volatility Smile
A volatility smile is a pattern where implied volatility is higher for options further away from the current underlying price on both sides than for options closer to the money. When plotted by strike, the shape can resemble a smile.
Why it matters to you
A simple pricing model may assume a single volatility level, but real option markets often price different strikes at different implied volatilities. The volatility smile is one way this appears.
